Cottages
Cottages built in the typical style of this area of south west Lancashire. Originally constructed of scarce local materials. Wood framed, wattle and daub walls, with reed and straw thatch roofs they were built low to avoid the prevailing winds that swept in from the Irish Sea. Locally made bricks were used for chimney and fireplace. There was very little natural stone available. Nearer to the sea shore they were usually built behind a "cop", a sand bank, erected to protect the dwelling from the elements.
The cottages above are built of brick, but follow the original pattern.
