There are two elements to this story. Firstly, is the catastrophic world changes leading to impending doom. Second, is the story of a young girl growing up in an often unsympathetic world. It is the later that a reader can recognise most and is, therefore, the most gripping. The main character, and narrator, is eminently likeable and is well written to the point that the backdrop becomes almost superfluous. This book is an enjoyable, if sad, read.
