This is the altar of the church (built in 1731) in the small village of Capulalpam.  Both sides of the interior are lined with these carved wooden retablos , many of which are painted in gold.
My sister and I traveled to Capulalpam, which is perched high on a mountainside in the Sierra Norte. She received treatments from a traditional healer, we gasped at the sweeping mountain vistas, and admired the white lilies, brilliant poinsettias, and other colorful flowers that dotted the landscape.
We enjoyed a yummy dinner of trout from a local mountain stream and spent the night in a cozy cabin.
