The ball chair

The Ball Chair  was designed by using one of the most simple geometric forms – the ball. Cutting of a part and fixing it at one point Eero Aarnio comes to a remarkable result – a completely unconventional shaped chair:

A Ball Chair is a room within a room with a cozy and calm athmosphere, protecting outside noises and giving a private space for relaxing or having a phonecall. Turning around its own axis on the base the view to the outer space is variable for the user and thus he is not completely excluded from world outside.

Sitting in this chair is a special experience, because all surrounding sounds are softed down, and it gives a certain feeling of privacy. Aarnio himself has a ball chair with a telephone in it, and some people had it fitted with speakers.


The Ball Chair is often used in sci fi films, and you’ll find it in magazines. Vivienne Westwood used some Ball Chairs in one of her shows. In the following years fibreglass as used in boat construction became one of Aarnio’s favorite materials. The resistant and well workable fibreglass enabled Aarnio to design ergonomic forms without restrictions -and intriguing new ones too.

This Ball Chair lies in the lobby of one of the lunch restaurants near the office. I took couple of selfies in the ball while waiting for my lunch date Pia, and she kindly took this picture. (And normally it's other way round, she waits for me...)
