Day 27 - Snowbombing
Breakfast time was punctuated by the distant booms of explosions being set off to release dangerous avalaches. This happens when there is a lot of snow, they do it before opening the lifts so no public are around. I love to hear the explosions, it usually means a good day skiing ahead.
When we got up into the mountains there was so much snow it was difficult to move through it. Only the fresh snow on the steepest slopes were skiable, and these were also unstable. The perfect skiing pitch is also the perfect avalanche pitch. Sods Law. Then as we were searching out safe spots to ski the ski area was slowly being closed down to stop skiers accessing potentially dangerous slopes. Once the dangerous areas were cleared the explosions started again. The safety patrol have a lot of work on their hands to get this lot safe again.
Once we accepted that there was limited acces to the terrain we started having fun in the forests and on the lower slopes. We even skied right back to town even thought the run was officially closed. It's the first time I have ever skied back to the town after 12 years of skiing here. It was so good we did it twice.
Every day skiing is a good day, and it's still snowing.
