Not a war memorial

I have passed this memorial many times over the year and often wondered what the story was.

The extra colour today caused me to have a hasty pitstop on my return to work from my lunch break. I was still ten minutes late though and the picture isn't how it looked in my mind.

The memorial was erected in 1825 to one William Alexander who left his lands to benefit the poor.
