Smokin' Copenhagen

Denmark and especially Copenhagen are flat. Most of the city is just five stories high with churches and a handful of exceptions peaking above that. The Danes love their spires and they are on just about every building of a certain age but there's one exception on the left here - Our Lady's Church (Vor Frue Kirke).

Here's why:
During the Napoleonic wars the English attacked Copenhagen. For the first time in history, shells were shot at the civilian population from ships in the entrance to the port. They used the very tall spire on Vor Frue Kirke as their sighting point, and on the night of 5 September 1807, a rocket set fire to the spire which collapsed into the nave of the church and set the entire building on fire.

The english had not even declared war on the danes at this point. This is therefore considered by many as the first example of a civilian terror attack. Not something I remember from my school history.

Taken from Frederiksberg park......again. With my 200mm .....again.
