Mount Tongariro
Today we drove north through the Tongariro National Park wherein lie 3 of NZs most iconic volcanoes - 2 of them still puffing away, as you can see in the top left hand side of the attached photo. Unfortunately it was very cloudy today and so none of the mountains could be seen in full.
We are now in Taupo town by lake Taupo which was formed from an enormous eruption 26,000 years ago, it spewed out 750 cubic kilometres of ash and pumice which made Krakatoa with 8 cubic kilometres look insignificant!
