Ice

We couldn't believe how thick this ice was - you can see from the gloved hand holding it that it's a good four inches - nor how beautiful it is in section. It comes from the ornamental pond in Benmore Gardens, and the gardeners who had picked up this piece had actually walked across it in the morning. Now, with the daytime temperature having peaked at 6ºC, the weight of a foot standing at the edge tipped the whole surface of the pond, so that water lapped over the far bank.
