The new teardrop sculpture & Memorial Peace Garden in abbey gardens
The garden is to acknowledge the deaths of 57 local Jews who were massacred nearby in 1190 - an event not previously commemorated - and all other victims of genocide attempts and similar atrocites.
The tear drop sculpture has been chosen for its natural and universal symbolism. It will remind us of the pity of war and persecution, wherever and whenever they happen. Its reflective surface will enable us to see ourselves and reflect upon the part we can play in opposing humanity's inhumanity, and supporting those who have suffered from it.
