Ristras
Ristras are the strings of chile you see hanging along porches and patios all over the Southwest. Ristras are sometimes used for decoration, and are said to bring good health and good luck. More often, they are hung up to dry for later cooking and eating.
My love of spicy foods has certainly grown over the years with Southwest dishes being among my favorites. I have not reached the point of appreciating the really hot peppers - I've seen friends turn red and break out in a sweat when eating them, only to then declare how great they are. Not me.
But even if I didn't like spicy foods, I think I would still like seeing ristras hanging in front of local restaurants.
