Falcon Square, Inverness
This is Gerald Laings artwork I mentioned in Yesterdays blip, The Falcon Square Mercat cross. It shows a Bronze unicorn four peregrine falcons showing a kill and four bowl sundials on a stone obelisk. Made in 2001-2. Falcon Square is named after John Falconer who opened Falcon Foundry at Inverness Rail Terminus in 1858.The railway reached Inverness in 1855 with the Foundry behind the station. After it fell into disuse most of it was destroyed but one part remained and was listed as a B category building making it one of just a few remaining buildings from the Victorian period.
When the Eastgate shopping centre was extended in 2002 every brick of the old foundry was dismantled and rebuilt at a ninety degree angle to one side of the Square. It now holds Pizza Express and Laura Ashley.
It is thought be haunted as light bulbs and fuses have blown and doors open and close by themselves. A factory worker was injured and killed in the Foundry.
The photo is nt great as it was taken from the car as we headed through the High Street to the Big Co op as we had a voucher to spend. It was a beautiful day, took a few photos at the canal before heading to the cinema to watch Ex Machina.
