Penshaw Monument

A short walk from home again today to Penshaw Hill. This structure, known to locals as "Penshaw Monument" but officially called "The Earl of Durham's Monument", is a dramatic gritstone monument, that can be seen for miles around in every direction. Always surrounded by people, fascinated by its scale and views.

The National Trust own it now and on weekends and light evenings you can climb a spiral staircase inside one of the legs and walk around the top, to get the best view for hundreds of miles.
