Police Scotland year 2, day 271 - bravery award

Police Scotland officer wins St Andrew’s Award for bravery

The extraordinary efforts of a Police Scotland officer have been recognised by the First Minister at a special award ceremony for members of the blue-light services.

As part of the First Minister’s Brave@Heart Awards, which took place in October this year, nominations were invited for the St Andrew’s Award, which further recognises and celebrates exceptional acts of bravery. PC Tonianne Ewart, then based in Baird Street Police Office in Glasgow, was this year’s winner.

Twenty-six year old PC Ewart was on duty in Glasgow in September when she was called to a multi-storey car park where a man was threatening to jump from the top floor. As officers reached the man, he suddenly pushed himself off the ledge. With no consideration for her safety, PC Ewart grabbed the man’s clothing and held on. To get a better grip of the 6’4” man who weighed around 18 stones, she stretched over the barrier which caused her feet to leave the ground. More officers arrived and pulled both PC Ewart and the man to safety. Thanks to her bravery, determination and high level of fitness, the man was prevented from taking his own life.
