Where I grew up close to the Mersey Estuary, Cheshire, it was always said that there must be a storm at sea if the gulls were coming so so far in land. It was only a few miles.
Now they are found everywhere in this country, even in Stratford on Avon which is almost as far as you can get from the sea in GB.
