Rock of Dunamase

Through the centuries, warriors have fought to control this limestone outcrop. The first known settlement was Dun Masc which was pillaged by the Vikings in 842.
Normans arrived in in late 1100's and it became the most important Anglo-Norman fortification in Laois.
Besieged and blown up by Cromwellian generals Hewson and Reynolds in 1651.
