This combination of floodlights, loud speaker and CCTV cameras could do a fine job at the perimeter of a prison or a secret Government establishment. In fact it is in the car park of a garden centre.

The nicest thing that anyone has said to me all day: in the self-service checkout of a large food store. I scanned a bottle of wine and a message came-up saying "25 Challenge" requiring the Assistant to satisfy herself that I was old enough to buy the wine.

She walked over to me.

"Well, what do you think" I asked "do I look over 25?"

She frowned: "borderline."
