Am I being cynical?

Going through M & S this display caught my eye. Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries and has evolved into an occasion in which lovers express their love with the exchange of cards, flowers and confectionery. However, when did teddy bears, wine and other numerous items become part of the norm?  Maybe just another marketing ploy?
