When we go to school we're told on a map Italy it looks like the shape of a boot.

Guess what? Here in China depending on the dictionary translation. Chicken, Rooster yet the most common translation is cock. The head of the chicken would be north east China or what was previously know as Manchuria and the tail would be the north west the largely muslim province of Xinjiang.
