In a glass darkly
Out earlier than usual today in the unrealized hopes of getting an X-ray done, I was shocked by the number of people sleeping in the streets. These were not tourists, here for Carnival and happy to camp out anywhere, these were the lost and forgotten ones, stretched out on the pavement or curled up in doorways, surrounded by rubbish and food scraps and plastic bags with a few belongings. I took a shot of one man, fast asleep with his two dogs keeping watch over him – a huge contrast with a family I saw on the way home, surrounded by suitcases, little boy with a dashing white hat, happily waiting to be spirited off to some holiday destination. I wanted to post a collage of the two shots, but it didn’t work.
Coming away from the X-ray clinic, I asked this young girl if I could take her photo. She wasn’t sure what to make of it, and obviously didn't want to miss the lift, which had just arrived. So we piled in, and when I pulled out the mobile,, she doubtfully allowed me to take a shot.
For the rest of the day, I’ve been dripping (literally, the heat was crushing) up and down the stairs and round the house, putting the finishing touches prior to our guest’s arrival. The poor girl has e-mailed me to say her BA flight is delayed, so she’ll only be arriving after midnight.
