Barry Island Breakwater, Vale of Glamorgan
This photograph is of Barry Island breakwater also known as Barry Harbour. Along the top of the breakwater is a rusty old single track railway and at the end of the track is a circular cast iron unmanned lighthouse which is 11.6 metres high and was made by the Chance Brothers in 1890. To the left of the breakwater and not shown in the blip is Barry Docks built by David Davies in 1889. The docks handled vast amounts of coal peaking in 1913 when over eleven million tonnes of coal were shipped from here. To the right of the tanker and six miles out in the Bristol Channel is Steep Holm Island which is a privately owned nature reserve which plays host to tens of thousands of sea birds each year. My apologies to both welshmaid50 and SSN595 for deleting this blip after you posted such nice comments. I can only put this down to an "IT malfunction"!
