This handsome mule and its proud owner followed us today, ready to offer a lift to anyone in the group as we climbed 1400m to the pass at 4200m, just under Amba Bwahit.

The gun he is carrying belongs to one of the two armed scouts who, by national park rules, have to accompany us. The park after the civil war could be a lawless place but today the concern is apparently of jackals in campsites.
