He's had a few, but then again...

The topic of conversation was rhubarb - its delicacy when lightly cooked, its origins on the banks of the Volga, its cultivation in Yorkshire., the toxicity of its leaves etc.

And what should later be served under a blanket of yellow hospital custard? Yes, that's right.

With thanks for all the sympathetic comments which were much appreciated but to which I have not had time to respond . 
The situation remains unchanged and I have returned home to await developments.
