Guinea Fowl Feather

A day busy with jobs and at last some time in the garden.  This left no time for running around looking for scenic blips so it was back to indoor shots.

Guinea Fowl have always intrigued me the noise they make, their funny shape and the plumage.  I collected this feather somewhere a while ago and have held on to it as an emergency blip.

Native to sub Saharan Africa they are kept along with other domestic fowl and if the cooking programs I watch are anything to go by are gaining popularity as a culinary item.  The scientific name is Numida meleagris which I will return to and they are the only members of the family Numididea.

Meleagris is the ancient Greek name for Guinea Fowl and interestingly is part of the scientific name for the Snakes Head Fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) because the chequered pattern on the petals is similar to this spotted effect on the feather.
