Sugar Mouse
When our children were young, we used to spend a week every year in the lovely Suffolk coastal town of Southwold. One of the highlights for the children was visiting the traditional sweet shop on St James Green, with its bottles of old-style sweets weighed out in front of you and dispensed into striped paper bags, racks of home made fudge in a variety of flavours, and good old sugar mice.
When we returned home today from our few days in Suffolk, our daughter (now adult) was delighted that we had maintained the tradition, visited the sweet shop and brought her home a sugar mouse.
Some years ago that little shop seemed to be under threat of closure, but fortunately someone bought the business and kept it going successfully. We noted that, once again, the shop is up for sale; I do hope that it finds another buyer who will maintain its traditional style, which seems so in keeping with the rest of this unspoilt seaside resort.
