Man in a Red Cap
Back Blip from my trip down south
After such wonderful weather last night it just kept rainning in Queestown and was still raining until we got over the Crown Range.
I had never stopped at Cardrona before so we stopped for a coffee and a good look around. It had started to heat up again and all the rain was left behind.
Cardrona was the centre of a gold rush in the mid-1800s, and mining continued there until well into the 20th century. But the interest in gold dwindled, and the town shrank as the miners left, leaving only a small hamlet centred around the Cardrona Hotel.
The most tangible link with the past in the Cardrona Valley, the Cardrona Hotel has witnessed the entire history from boom to bust and back to boom again. Now a regular stop for skiers and snowboarders, as well as for passing tourists, the history of the hotel is as fascinating as the place itself.
