I didn't need the  LED I bought to fix this contraption - it was just a wiring fault.

My parents now have a working indicator to tell them when their garage door is open without going outside to check.  Useful because sometimes the electric door opener can get a bit confused.  Originally installed in 1990 (when I was about 16) it should now be good for another 25 years...
