Felbrigg Church

We got out for a cycle ride before the rain came. There was a chill wind and the sky was overcast so we didn’t go too far. Later on I figured out how to remove a back wheel from my bike and fit a new inner tube; since they cut the hedges around here, I keep getting punctures from thorns in the road. It should have been extremely simple apart from the fact that I can’t figure out how to release the brakes. There was a complex series of diagrams and technical words online which may mean something to someone, but didn’t help me in the least. The thorn was a beast to remove, I couldn’t get it out with a pliers or tweezers and in the end, HL managed to force it out with a needle.

St Margarets Church stands in the grounds of Felbrigg Hall. It was once surrounded by the village of Felbrigg but during a severe outbreak of the plague during the sixteenth century, the villagers relocated about half a mile away. Although the church is still in use, they only have a service there once in a blue moon.

There is something rather appealing about the way it stands there in the fields; its door is almost always unlocked and its mediaeval interior, though restored by the Victorians, is simple and plain. There are some brasses on the floor covered up by old rugs and carpets which date from the fourteenth century.

The north porch is battered and weathered, and has become almost derelict. I took this photo through the side windows which have no glass.
