Noises from the kitchen...

Fill a dog with doubt.  Should he remain where he is, comfortably chewing on his bone, lying in his warm spot on the carpet?  Or should he investigate, in case there is a chance - no matter how small - that he is missing out on a dropped morsel?  Yes, noises from the kitchen fill a dog with doubt!
