Pilot Whales
Set off after an early breakfast for the market in Adeje, which was a 10 minute taxi ride from the hotel. The intention was to see the market, have a coffee in a beach front cafe and head back to the hotel for more lazy time by the pool.
Now, while a little bit of poolside activity is ok, we all prefer to be out and about exploring the area we have come to visit. After coffee, we wandered down to Puerto Colon and decided to book a boat trip for later in the holiday. However, the chance to go out for 3 hours on a catamaran at a bargain price was too good an offer to resist and before we knew it we were on the high seas of the Atlantic with our eyes peeled for whales.
About 3 miles off the coast there they were, a pod of about 25 - 30 Short Fin Pilot Whales. There were another couple of small boats in the area and the whales were quite content to swim between us diving occasionally for the squid they feed on. The highlight was the sight of a mother and a young whale no more than 10 foot from where we sat at the bow of the boat. Only managed to blip part of the mother so decided instead to go for this group of Pilot Whales with another boat in the background to give a bit of scale.
En-route back to port, we stopped off in a bay to swim and snorkel in the clear water. It was simply wonderful and a wee bit of paradise.
All in all, it was a wonderful trip and the sight of those whales is something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. How lucky we are!
