Sunset through the Scott Monument

We were through in Edinburgh to meet up with a friend whom we hadn't seen for a couple of years.  The train arrived almost one hour before we were due to meet so we had a short walk along Princess street - short because there was a bitterly cold wind.

The Scott monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott and (courtesy of Wikepedia), Is the largest monument to a writer in the world. It was designed by George Meikle Kemp (1795-1844) who was influenced by the architecture of Melrose Abbey and Roslin Chapel.  it is over 200feet high, with 287 steps to 4 levels from which you can have spectacular views.  And no, we did not brave the icy blasts to take in the views.  The statue at the base of the monument is of Scott with his dog Maida, sculpted by  Sir John Steell, and carved from Italian Carrera marble.
After a light meal we went to the Festival Theatre to see "One Man Two Guvnors", one of the funniest plays I've seen.  Real laugh-out-loud stuff.
