The Reid Concert Hall
We have discovered the lunchtime concerts in this imposing hall. Last Friday (when I was celebrating my 1460th blip) we attended an organ recital, today we very much enjoyed John Kitchen and James Ritzema playing works by Gabrieli, Bonelli, Soler, Gussago and Pasquini (C16 and C17) for two harpsichords.
The Reid Concert Hall was built in 1859 to serve the University of Edinburgh's School of Music. High on the side is the inscription 'School Of The Theory Of Music - University of Edinburgh' and in the corner 'David Cousin Architect'. On the end is inscribed 'Endowed by General Reid'.
The building also contains a museum of musical instruments, which includes the only surviving example of a Caledonica, a miniature bassoon that plays an octave higher than a normal bassoon, made by William Meikle in 1825. Should we attend further concerts I shall take the opportunity to blip it.
