Banana republic?

One of the vaguely interesting factoids I've picked up around here, upon seeing acre upon acre of plantations, is that Madeira grows and exports a lot of sugar and bananas.

Those yellow slippery fundamentals of so much comedy account for around 45% of this island's exports.

Does that make it a sweet banana republic?

(Or am I going palmy barmy?!)
