Derelict Railroad Bridge

in Cushman over the Siuslaw River. The little house for the person who was supposed to make the bridge open and close was falling apart already and the bridge shows lots of rust. Whenever I pass this spot on the Highway 126 , it is either raining (like today) or thick fog clouds are hanging above the river. The sight this afternoon shortly before sunset was exceptionally clear albeit not deprived of its usual tristesse.
The bridge and the house have been built in 1914, for a little side line from Coos Bay to Eugene, financed by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Here you can read more about this little rail road that was only installed to bring the logs to the mills in Coos Bay.
This rail road has not been used for many, many years, as trucks have taken over the transport of the logs. Since 2007, people started slowly to reassemble and repair the tracks. The work is not finished yet.
I love to see these silent witnesses of history.
The few remaining inhabitants of Cushman consist of hardy white trailer trash, the last real houses are for sale. They nearly wanted to beat me, because I obviously came too close to their trailers taking this picture...

Rainy day, shopping trip to Eugene and now home and fire in the fireplace.
