Red Rock Canyon

About 15 minutes drive away from the glitzy Strip in Las Vegas you can find yourself in the amazing Red Rock Canyon National Park. Within the desert canyon you can find large cliffs of red sandstone layered with grey limestone which look superb set against the brilliant blue Nevada sky. There is a circular scenic drive through the park and many places where you can get out to explore the rocks, hike through the many trails or simply sit and admire the vast scenery. I just love it there. My son is currently away with work for a week so my DIL and I decided to take a hike through the canyon with the girls in slings and Kymba on a long lead. The large cacti you can see are fascinating as parts of them appear to die off completely - you can see a pair of seemingly dead ones to the far right of the bottom picture - but then sometimes they start new green growth at the top of the dead stems, as in the top picture. The whole area we hiked had these cacti dotted around with very little other vegetation at all. It was a fabulous day out and the girls seemed to love it too.
