Przwalski Horses, Khustain National Park, Mongolia

BACKBLIP alert!

These are wild horses.  According to the regulations, you are not allowed to approach closer than 300 meters.  We did not.  Some young adventurers did give it a try, though, but their attempts only irritated the horses and made them gallop away too quickly for the unthinking tourists to catch up.  If you think about it, the 300-meter rule isn't really necessary because the horses are too wild to approach.  Nevertheless!  It was a privilege to see them in their natural habitat.  They actually come from Mongolia but then died out.  Some scientists, though, found two lone specimens somewhere else and brought them to, of all places ... The Netherlands!  They were then bred here, in strict isolation, until a sufficient number had been born, and then, with the help of the Dutch government, transported back to Mongolia.  If I remember right, this is one of the area where they were allowed to roam.
