Sully Island, near Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan.

Sully Island is a small 14.5 acre tidal island at Swanbridge, Vale of Glamorgan. It was inhabited by both the Vikings and the Normans and was famous in later years for being a smugglers haunt and as a landing point for illegal immigrants. Documents show that in 1569, harbour officials seized 28,000 lb of cheese and eighty barrels of butter hidden there by smugglers. Many ships have met a grisly end on this island including the Artic Survey Vessel, the SY Scotia in 1916. The island is connected to the mainland by a treacherous rocky causeway which is uncovered for about 3 hours either side of low tide. Over the years, many many people have been swept to their deaths trying to get off the island, unfortunately the tide rises rapidly over the causeway with very strong currents. In 2011 the island was privately purchased for "considerably more" than the £95,000 asking price and the new owner has stated that the island will be kept free for everyone.
