Harry Mulisch
Harry Kurt Victor Mulisch was a famous Dutch writer. He wrote more than 80 novels, plays, essays, poems and philosophical reflections that have been translated into more than 30 languages.
He was born in Haarlem on 29 July 1927 and lived there over 30 years before moving to Amsterdam where he died on 30 October 2010. Amongst other achievements his book 'The Assault' was filmed in 1986 and won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.
In 1992 his book 'The Discovery of Heaven' was voted 'The Best Dutch Book Ever'. Mulisch was regularly thought of as a possible future Nobel laureate.
The city of Haarlem granted him a Honour Citizen status and later erected this statue made by sculptor Jikke van Loon.
It's placed on the Grote Markt - Haarlems main square - and was reavealed by Mulisches son Menzo and his widow Kitty Saal in 2013.
