Not my dad's love child
When clearing my father's house after he passed away 4 years ago, I found a few photos which I scanned and occasionally flick through. Many of the photos are quite old and unsurprisingly, there are more faces there that I don't know than there are that are familiar to me, and I always planned on trying to put names to as many of them as I could. OK, it's taken me a while but I recently solved the mystery of two of those that piqued my curiosity the most.
Dad's Love child (left most picture)
This one freaked Rosina out as she finds this young girl to have may similarities to herself, hence the joke that she's probably my dad's love child. Turns out that it is actually his younger sister Ruby, hence the family resemblance. Ruby is still with us and recently turned 75. I have no memory of ever having met her, but would like to. I recall that my mother fell out with her when we children were not invited to her and her now husband Micheal's wedding. My mother could bear a grudge - hence the lack of contact. I need to fix that.
The extras from 'Happy Days' (bottom right)
Unbelievably cool and it turns out, the young man on the left is my mum's cousin Tommie Robinson from Horden in County Durham. He and his friends had come to visit my parents in Luton shortly after my parents were married.
The Candy Floss Crew (top right)
No mystery here as it's me, my 2 sisters, my cousins Janet & Keith and one interloper whose identity I don't know. So why is this picture included you may ask? Well all of these revelations have come as a result of sharing the pictures on Facebook, in a closed group called 'Lutonians Caught on Camera which has resulted in me connecting with distant cousins and even more distant relatives. As part of a conversation with Janet, the girl in the foreground of this picture, I shared this picture and asked if she knew where it was taken. I thought Felixstowe simply because I know we holidayed there together when I was very young but she informed me that it was the funfair in Luton. I asked how she could possibly know this. Turns out that we made the local paper and better still, her mum still has the newspaper clipping. Guess who I am going to be visiting soon?
I love it when you are able to add some detail to these old snapshots. It brings them to life. I was also able to share the only picture I have of my paternal grandparents with cousins that I have never met. It was the first time they had ever seen a picture of the grandparents that we share! How cool is that?
