Proper football
I have become a bit disillusioned with professional football of late, due to the way my team, Coventry City, have been brought to their lowest level in over 50 years by clueless owners and by the excesses of the Premier League. So today I went to enjoy some grassroots football - Heywood Town v Crompton Villa in Division Four of the Rochdale & District Sunday Football League.
There were some very skilful players and no shortage of effort on both sides. Here is the first Heywood goal and I, unlike the Villa keeper, managed to catch their second, scored from a corner. The players were pretty well-behaved and the referee dealt well with anyone who stepped out of line.
A couple of examples of entertainment that you don't get in the professional game:
1. The linesman and one of the Villa defenders having a long debate on the relative merits of Audi v BMW cars.
2. One of the Villa players, after being substituted, asked me if I was taking photographs of his arse. I said I would have needed a wide angle lens for that.
I think I will be back to see more Proper Football.
