On board the HMAS Humanity
I was proud to match in our local multicultural festival along side refugees, asylum seekers and their supporters. Some Hazari guys printed slogans in their language to join the slogans written last year by some of our Tamil friends. It was sobering to think that one of those chaps killed himself as a result of the uncertainty of a looming threat to be returned to Sri Lanka.
All groups represented in the parade were given these people cut outs, which we made into children to remind folk that there are still many children in detention.
Our government, and their predecessors, came out very poorly in a recent human rights report about asylum seeker kids in detention. So they successfully deflected attention by attacking the author of the report. Such insidious behaviour!
