St Mary's Church Walesby
Today we had a Blip-Trip out to Walesby, a pretty little Lincs village. This shot shows St Mary's Church.
The gates are just visible in the shot. According to tradition, the gates are closed and tied with twine when a wedding takes place in the church, and are untied after the groom has lifted his new wife over the gates to symbolise the start of their happy new life together. The potential there for calamity seems great if the groom doesn't put in a few gym sessions and the bride stick to her pre-wedding diet!
St Mary's is an ‘arts and crafts' Church designed by the Irish architect, Temple Moore and came about through the efforts of the Rev. Perceval Laurence, Rector of Walesby 1879-1913. Shortly after the rector came to the parish, the inconveniently sited Old Church was virtually abandoned and for over 30 years the people of Walesby worshipped in a ‘temporary' iron building in the village. By 1910 sufficient funds had been raised to build a new Church. Work began on 6th June 1913 and on that very day, the 84 yr old, Rev Laurence died.
We also visited the old All Saints church, now known as the Ramblers' church. It's more interesting - lots of history there!
Second attempt at this! It took me too long faffing about the first time and logged me out! What is the purpose of that, if not just to annoy people? I've noticed it on other sites too. Why do they want you to rush things? Does it really matter how long you take?
