Fermented Shark & Aurora Borealis
Day 2 in Reykjavik.
After the disappointment of our Northern Lights tour being cancelled last night we were in high spirits for our whale watching trip. A girl in our hotel got some amazing shots yesterday.
After an hour in a coach, and not even reaching our boat, it was cancelled as it was too windy so we turned around and had another hour back 'home' - we rebooked for the next day.
We'd reserved a table in a lovely looking Icelandic restaurant & tried some of the local delicacies including the much feared fermented shark (it wasn't as bad as we'd thought), minke whale, wind dried fish & seaweed, followed by a horse steak. Another fantastic meal - this place really is a foodie heaven.
We'd heard that there was a very good chance of seeing the Northern Lights tonight so set off to a very cold and windy beach on the outskirts of Reykjavik & after about just 10 mins we had the best treat!
A 2 hour display that is beyond description. I was having issues with my proper camera so had to make do with a couple of iphone snaps so not great quality. I've never been so cold in my life but oh my - completely unforgettable.
We were surprised on getting back in to the city in the early hours that they were still dancing right over our heads. We later heard that it was an exceptionally strong display - the best of the whole month so we were really lucky!
