It's that type of snow again
I spotted this lying on the driveway about 7.00, it was still there at 8.00 and thought to capture before J went out in the car. I like these snow stones, whatever they are called, and just noticed the little stones on the surface of the driveway.
For ITWM and fellow blippers I have just read Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow again and would recommend as a good read. Although I didn't find the word Graupel.
From the internet
Graupel (German pronunciation: [ˈɡʁaʊpəl]; English /ˈɡraʊpəl/, also called soft hail or snow pellets)[1] is precipitation that forms when supercooled droplets of water are collected and freeze on a falling snowflake, forming a 2–5 mm (0.079–0.197 in) ball of rime. The term graupel comes from the German language.
Graupel is distinct from hail, small hail and ice pellets: the World Meteorological Organization defines small hail as snow pellets encapsulated by ice, a precipitation halfway between graupel and hail.[2] The METAR code for graupel is GS.
