Athens Day Six
National Gardens
The Gardens were originally called the Royal Gardens because they were built for Queen Amalia during the 1840's. Most of the initial plantings were from Italy, 18.000 species, and were brought by the New Greek Navy. During later times modern sculptures have been placed around the gardens of known Greek authors. Next to it is a fine café. The garden was renamed the National Garden in 1927 during the Republic. It is open to the public, and there are seven entrances to the garden.
.What an immense disappointment. We visited the gardens during early afternoon the weather was lovely and the gardens did feel tranquil but there were some cages with some very sad birds, pigeons included, parrots, goats and peacocks inside, also some ducks with no pond to swim around in which i thought was quite sad, especially as there were quite a few ponds in the gardens with absolutely nothing in them. We did come across a pond with koi carp in them, also the pond with the terrapins and gold fish as in the photo which i thought was amazing. The gardens are worth a visit and the children did seem to love the animals, so if you have children it is worth a visit but take some food to feed the animals, and on a hot day in Athens it will be a nice shady & cool place to visit.
But i don’t think i will be returning
