Broken Tree

A recent gale blew over this tree in our local woods. The trunk snapped about 3 metres above ground and the trunk fell over the footpath, creating an 'arch' to walk under.

The trunk is still attached to the stump - but the forces have caused it to partially split like a matchstick and in places, as in this shot, the pieces are still joined by ribbons of bark and wood.

I had seen it before, but this afternoon the sun was just catching the orange pieces and making them stand out nicely against the pale wood behind.

This piece is about 2.5 metres off the ground so I had my camera held at arms length above my head, using live view to try and see where it was pointing!
