The Watcher
T and I met him at the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick (mind you, not much chance of meeting him anywhere else).
He's looking at the Bass Rock, the largest Northern Gannet colony in the world. In the midst of the breeding season the Rock shines white in the sun, reflecting off the gannets' plumage. In the breeding season there's now virtually no room left on the Rock - gannets have been successful in recent years, and it's unclear what will happen next.
The gannets have just started returning for the breeding season - T and I saw some of them on the webcams in the Seabird Centre. They come back to the exact same spot on the Rock each year, so although there were only a few around, some of them were in neighbouring spaces and were bickering to stand their ground.
