Penarth Pier Pavillion

The 750 foot long pier  was built in 1894 and in 1930, the spectacular Art Deco pavilion was opened. Because it lacked any form of heating, the pavilion which was originally used as a cinema, dance hall and night club, was much under used during the winter months.  Over the years,  the pavilion deteriorated into a very dilapidated state and In 2008, a charity organisation, Penarth Arts and Crafts Ltd. was formed to restore the structure.  In 2009, they were awarded £99,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The charity developed a £3.9 million refurbishment scheme in order to use the pavilion as a café, observatory, and multi purpose community complex. After planning permission was granted for the project, the lottery fund awarded the project a further £1.68 million. As part of the refurbishment, the structure has now been covered in zinc sheeting and looks really spectacular especially in bright sunlight. People who have travelled to and from the pier on the pleasure steamers PS Waverley and MV Balmoral have said that the pavillion can be seen from many miles out to sea on a sunny day.
