Very sad to hear that filmmaker Albert Maysles died today. The extraordinary Grey Gardens, which he directed with his brother David, is one of my favourite films, and was one of the main reasons I became a documentary programmer. I was lucky enough to host a Q&A with him at the film festival here in 2005; I was very nervous beforehand – he was a hero and I was worried in case he wasn't the brilliant, wise and compassionate man I believed him to be – but he couldn't have been lovelier. The world is a darker place tonight without him in it.
