Lord Edward Brotherton 1856-1930
Here we are at the entrance to the Brotherton Library in the University of Leeds. Auntie Nita informed me that I am a distant relative of Lord Edward Brotherton, so I decided I would investigate further. It seems she is right, and here is a write up I found on the Internet:
"In 1882, on the eve of his marriage to Mary Jane Brookes, Edward moved out of his cottage on the Wakefield site, but sadly a year later his young wife died in childbirth along with their baby. During the months following his wife’s death Edward devoted his time to expanding his business. He never married again, choosing instead to lavish his affections on his nephews and nieces."
Mary Jane Brookes was my grandma's sister on my dad's side, so it seemed fitting that whilst we were on our second and final (hopefully!) viewing of Leeds Uni that I had my photo (with Big Jim especially for 'proud Weegie') taken in front of the library named after him.
History lesson over!
